"4muddyfeet - bare knuckle with an EZ30" (4muddyfeet)

In the Defender picking up some decorating supplies (I've got an awesome weekend planned...) I came across a brilliant farm-bred, work-beaten, lifted, open bed 90's Hilux (not pictured). The guy was loading some slabs onto the bed so I pulled up next to him and rolled down the window.
'Hey man, I love your pick-up'
'Yeh, it's better than yours'
' - Oh. OK'
So I just rolled up the window and drove off, slightly shocked. I've met people who can't accept a compliment on their vehicle, but I've never met one who accepts (?) the compliment and then tells me his pickup is better than my pickup when mine is definitely not a pickup! Made me laugh on the way home.

Oh man, way to spoil the fun. And frankly, I'd prefer this Defender over any Hilux.

I don't get that thing where people call anything bigger than a RAV4 a truck.
Chevy Tahoe? Truck.
GMC Yukon? Truck.
Cadillac Escalade? Truck.
Why? They're SUVs. There's a really big difference. Trucks have a rear bed. SUVs do not. Can an SUV do similar things as a truck? Yes. Can a truck do similar things as an SUV? Yes. This does not make them the same.

Well the General Motors SUV's and Trucks are both on the K2XX platform. So they're kinda sorta trucks.

They're kinda sorta trucks in the way the Hennessy Venom or Tesla Roadster are kinda sorta Lotus Elises.

*shrugs* I don't know why they are called trucks. It bothers me more when people call them cars though. Don't know why that bothers me.

My 05 Magnum is classified as an SUV. Meanwhile my dad's 03 Voyager is classified as a wagon.
How messed up is that?

Meh, so many semantics. Fire trucks are definitely 'trucks' but have no beds as are big rigs. No one calls a Tahoe a 'pickup', but 'truck' is pretty accepted as a broad term.

I'll freely accept anything above a certain weight as being a truck. But an SUV that seats 7? That's no truck.
I don't want to live in a trucked up world. Leave room for the rest of us.

That may of been the first time he's heard a compliment and was just using his go-to response to insults.

Haha, fair enough...note: I also wouldn't call an SUV a truck. Just ain't worth correcting others...it's like telling people that 'rims' only describes a small part of a wheel. They just roll their eyes and leave the crazy dude to his rambling.

Minus the rear windows and the snorkel, it's pretty much there. Ex-military long wheelbase with Wolf wheels in drab green... you're right, he is a dirty peasant!

Well that was rude.
I got an Xtra cab 4runner without a bed sitting in my yard waiting for my damn friend to come pick it up.
Just looking at the way it's built; You could safely say it woudn't touch your Landy.

I drive a land cruiser and call it a truck. IMO anything with a truck frame underneath is a truck. Not all commercial trucks have open air beds out back - in fact most don't.

I don't know if he thought I was being sarcastic? I've always wanted a Hilux/4runner/Surf, but I struggle to find anything in decent condition for a fair price since Top Gear made the platform famous.

Yep, same with my 4Runner. In fact, it came with a stronger frame than the U.S. spec pickup.

Nice ...You lucky bastard! Thats one fine car *drool*. I would buy one in a heartbeat if the Dutch government wouldn´t charge me so much. Damn emission & weight taxes. I assume you´ve got a LPG conversion on it? Also, do you offroad it much? How is it? I´m so curious...

Thank you :) Nope, dirty diesel through and through. Due to its age, over here in the UK it's classed as a light goods vehicle, which is subject to a flat yearly tax rate of £180 regardless of its emissions.
I do offroad it, but only about 4 times a year. It performs well off-road, and I have the advantage of heavy duty rear suspension (courtesy of the British Armed Forces) which allows me to stick some weight over the rear axle for a bit more grip without losing a lot of suspension travel. It's a bit noisy on-road though, I'm currently in the process of buying a military radiation insulation for kit the interior roof and sides just to make it a bit quieter (and warmer/less draughty) when driving at highway speed. Overall it's awesome fun, but not super practical :)

Seriously there is no nice way to say it unless you were already having a casual conversation with him. I once pulled up on a super clean Volvo wagon in my Benz and told the guy that he had a great wagon and that the wheels were really nice. He told me to go fuck myself and sped off.
He thought I was trying to be facetious and actually trying to make it seem like his car was inferior. It's not everyone but there are some people who are not used to receiving compliments on their vehicle and think that the person is actually trying to poke fun at them.
